Emma, the protagonist of the novel, is the passionate daughter of a wealthy farm owner. She marries a doctor, Charles Bovary, but soon grows bored of married life and has an affair with a womanizer named Rodolphe. When their affair ends, she enters into a new one with a man named L£¿on.
The religious court accused Flaubert of an offense to the public and of religious morality but was acquitted.
