Legal action was taken against Flaubert for ¡®Madame Bovary¡¯ but was acquitted. Nevertheless, the ordeal left him highly stressed and led him to abandon civilization to write a historical novel, which became ¡®Salammb£¿.¡¯ Salammb£¿ is set in Carthage before and during the Mercenary Revolt in the 3rd century BC. The theme of the novel is based on 20 or so lines from a volume of ¡®Histories.¡¯
